How Do I Know If Invisalign® Will Work for Me?

Metal braces are an effective cosmetic dentistry treatment to straighten crooked teeth and fix other dental issues. However, they are notorious for being cumbersome, limiting, and making many dental patients feel embarrassed to have them, especially when meeting new people. In rare situations, metal braces might even be painful at times.

In 2000, Invisalign® clear orthodontics changed braces forever. The revolutionary dental treatment uses removable, clear plastic aligners that straighten teeth gradually and painlessly. The aligners are remolded several times per year, just as metal braces need regular adjustments. Due to all of the amazing benefits Invisalign can bring, it is no surprise everyone wants them. However, Invisalign might not be right for every dentistry patient due to their specialty design and functionality.

When wondering if Invisalign is right for you, ask these questions:

  • What do I want Invisalign to correct?
Invisalign is efficient at correcting gapped teeth, crowded teeth, overbites, and under-bites. Other dental issues might be corrected by Invisalign, but odds are there is a more efficient system, like traditional metal braces.
  • How old are you or your child?
Adults and teenagers should be able to use Invisalign no problem, but young children will likely not be able to use the clear aligners. Children have growing teeth that do not respond well to the aligners. Once again, metal braces might be better if you are inquiring for your child.
  • Can you commit to the treatment schedule?
Invisalign clear straighteners need to be on your teeth for up to 22 hours every day for months, or years. If you think you might get uncomfortable and take Invisalign out a few times a day, then you will interrupt the treatment, making it an ineffective candidate for you.
  • Do you have dental insurance?
Many dental insurance policies will help mitigate the cost of Invisalign treatment, though. Double-check your policy for more information.
