CEREC Same Day Crowns

How Does A CEREC Same Day Dental Crown Compare to A Crown Crafted in A Lab?

When a tooth becomes weakened due to severe decay or damage, or if it has undergone root canal therapy, it will need a zirconia dental crown (also called a cap) to be saved. You can get a traditional dental crown from any local neighborhood dentist. CEREC same-day crowns, however, are not offered everywhere, although you may wish they were once you learn more about them from Drs. Chris Wujick and Lester Castillo and their team at Boulevard Dental in Seminole, Florida.

CEREC crowns offer exceptional convenience to dental patients, but how do they compare to traditional crowns?

Length of Procedure

One of the biggest differences between a traditional dental crown and a CEREC same-day crown is the time required for treatment. When you go in for a traditional crown, you are looking at a multi-appointment process. During your first appointment, your tooth will be prepared, physical impressions will be taken and sent to an off-site lab to fabricate the crown, and a temporary crown will be placed. Once your permanent crown is ready, you would then return for a second appointment to have your temporary crown removed and permanent crown placed. All of these steps are obsolete when it comes to CEREC. Within a single appointment, digital images are taken and sent into a CAD/CAM machine which takes the imaging and crafts your dental crown right there at your dentist’s office within a single appointment!

Materials

When you opt for a traditional crown, you will have various choices of materials to have your crown crafted from. Porcelain is the most popular for traditional crowns, but you can also get porcelain-fused-to-metal and gold and metal alloys. Crowns crafted from metal are stronger than those made of porcelain, and you may need this in special circumstances. However, crowns crafted from Zirconia, such as a CEREC same-day crown, is three times stronger than porcelain and will last you many years when cared for properly.

Temporary Crown

When you choose a CEREC same-day dental crown, there is no need for a temporary crown because you will receive your permanent crown within the same visit that your digital impressions will be taken. This is great news to anybody who has struggled with a temporary crown, which is often less durable than a permanent crown. Also, temporary crowns are more prone to cracks, breaks, and falling off the tooth. You have to be extra cautious with a temporary crown to avoid any complications while you wait for your permanent crown. It is a big relief to patients who are getting a CEREC crown when they hear they will not have to go through this additional hassle of wearing a temporary crown.

As you can see, CEREC is incredibly convenient without sacrificing the restoration’s quality. You get the same quality that you would expect from a crown crafted in a lab.
