Since your tooth structure may absorb pigments from staining foods and beverages more readily post-whitening, we may ask that you avoid these foods and beverages at first. It’s best to stick to lighter-colored food choices, like white sauces, pasta, rice, milk, vanilla yogurt, and bananas. To manage sensitivity, we may also recommend refraining from hot or cold foods and beverages.

The home method may be appealing for individuals with a history of tooth sensitivity. Patients who choose this method also appreciate that their whiter teeth are revealed gradually, resulting in a more subtle effect. They also like having control over the level of whitening; patients can stop wearing their trays once they have reached their “goal shade.” It’s a nice alternative for patients who have more flexibility in their schedule and are not under a time crunch to whiten their teeth before a wedding, job interview, reunion, or another big event.

In general, it’s important to start with a clean surface. Brushing and flossing beforehand helps achieve the most natural-looking results because the gel can be evenly distributed across your clean, smooth teeth. Both your teeth and the whitening trays themselves should be patted dry, as moisture can weaken the gel and, in turn, reduce its effectiveness. The whitening gel will then be applied to the clean, dry trays. Take care to avoid overloading your trays and remove any gel that might seep over the edges. Once inserted, gently press the trays to ensure the gel is delivered evenly to the teeth. You will be provided with a prescribed wear time that is tailored to your needs. Wear exactly as recommended, and not longer than the prescribed time.

With consistent and proper wear, you should notice that your teeth look a little whiter every day. This process occurs in the days and weeks following the start of your treatment. Several factors can influence when you will see your results and reach that “goal smile” stage. These factors include the strength or concentration of the gel, your compliance with actually wearing the trays as directed, and the type/severity of stains that you wish to remove.

Or we can provide you with additional whitening gels to maintain the results of your home treatment.
