In Clearwater and Seminole, Florida, when a root canal is needed, patients in the area know they can trust the team at Boulevard Dental, where Drs. Chris Wujick and Jason Kopakin perform safe and effective root canals, a common dental procedure designed to save teeth that might otherwise need to be extracted. Many patients avoid root canals due to fear and misconceptions about the procedure. Understanding the symptoms and reasons for needing a root canal can help alleviate anxiety and ensure timely treatment. Let’s address common questions and concerns related to root canals.
Root canals are famous for being painful, but this is primarily a myth. Dental technology and anesthesia advances make root canals no more uncomfortable than getting a filling. The purpose of a root canal is to remove infected tissue and relieve pain, not to cause it. Post-procedure discomfort is typically mild and manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers. Trustworthy sources and experiences from other patients often reveal that root canals are a highly effective treatment for saving teeth and eliminating pain.
Avoiding a needed root canal can allow the infection inside your tooth to spread. This can lead to severe pain, abscess formation, and potential tooth loss. In severe cases, the infection can spread to other parts of your body, posing serious health risks. Early intervention with a root canal can prevent these complications and save your natural tooth. Delaying treatment usually results in more complex and costly dental procedures down the line, such as tooth extraction and dental implants.
A tooth’s pulp, which comprises connective tissues, blood vessels, and nerves, is visible inside the chamber. It is this pulp which, when infected, needs to be removed via a root canal procedure. The pulp can become infected or inflamed for several reasons, including deep decay, cracks, or trauma. If infection is left untreated, it can lead to significant pain and possible abscess. We remove the infected pulp during a root canal to save the tooth by eliminating the infection. The space is then cleaned, disinfected, and filled to prevent further infection. Removing the damaged pulp is crucial for relieving pain and preserving your tooth’s structure.
Dental insurance coverage for root canals varies depending on your specific plan. Most dental insurance plans cover a portion of the cost of a root canal as it is a necessary procedure for restoration. It’s essential to check with your insurance provider to understand the extent of your coverage and any out-of-pocket costs you might incur. Our team can assist you in navigating your insurance benefits and provide a detailed estimate of your treatment costs.
