The technology also supports the most comfortable experience; a great option for our neighbors whose fear and anxiety have kept them from the dental care that they need to be “well” and happy!
What is laser dentistry?
Laser dentistry utilizes specialized laser systems in various common dental treatments. This approach to dentistry is an alternative to the use of “traditional” dental instruments, such as the dental drill. Many of these conventional instruments and techniques can be “triggers” for dental anxiety and fear. By using lasers instead of traditional tools like dental drills, our apprehensive patients feel more relaxed and are able to undergo treatment more comfortably. Additionally, laser dentistry is considered to be a less invasive, more conservative (tissue-preserving), and faster alternative to traditional techniques.
How do lasers work in dental care?
Lasers have been used in medicine for decades. They generally involve your doctor or another health care professional directing the laser device toward the damaged or diseased tissues that require treatment. The laser is then activated. Once activated, a beam of light targets the treatment sites. This focused light generates energy. The energy from the laser is absorbed by the target tissues and used to remove damaged/diseased tissue, stimulate healing processes, ease inflammation, relieve pain, and much more. There is no cutting involved. Therefore, lasers are not considered an invasive treatment.
Will you use lasers in my treatment?
There are many different types of lasers available on the market today for healthcare professionals. Some lasers are made for soft tissue procedures. Others are designed for hard tissue procedures. Some do both: treating the teeth and the surrounding tissues, like the gums and oral mucosa. At Boulevard Dental, our dentists expertly use laser technology to repair cavities with fillings and for other restorative treatments designed to rebuild and preserve the teeth.
Additional applications for lasers at our office include:
- Needle-free gum trimming to recontour a “gummy” smile
- Removal of canker sores, cold sores, and other bumps in the mouth
- Snoring relief – lasers tighten tissues in the throat to drastically reduce or eliminate snoring in many of our patients
How are lasers used for cavities?
Fillings are a type of dental restoration commonly used to treat cavities, or areas of decay that form in the tooth. The decay process can erode the structure of the teeth, leaving behind holes or “cavities.” We can effectively “fill in” the cavity or missing tooth structure to rebuild the strength, function, and appearance of the tooth. Our dentists may direct the laser toward the decayed area. The laser is used to non-invasively “prepare” the tooth, which involves removing the damaged tissue and preparing the treated space to “accept” the filling. Lasers are multi-talented and powerful; we can even use them to sterilize the treatment site. By killing harmful bacteria, we encourage fast and predictable treatment.
Why should I consider laser treatment at Boulevard Dental?
Laser dentistry offers numerous benefits. For those who are triggered by the sound, sensation, pressure, and sight of the dental drill, laser dentistry presents a much quieter and gentler treatment alternative. Since the laser can be directed with such precision toward target tissues, it is considered a highly effective treatment that also preserves maximum healthy tooth structure and surrounding tissues. We can generally treat more in less time with lasers, and the gentle nature of the laser means that numbing anesthetic or shots may not be required to complete your treatment. This is great news and a relief for the many patients who may fear needles and numbing agents as well.
